One could ask Aristotle of what he would think
Of pursuing moderation, and avoiding the brink:

When considering moderation, which is to say, justice
It is unlikely you’ll find the mean on first chance

But as you wander the spectrum, and your intentions will dance
Your aim will then narrow, your understanding enhanced.

Like the archer whose aim could ever be so refined
So too will your efforts be rewarded in kind.

So to answer your question on the theme of excess
The answer is dependent on what it means to have less:
While in some cases the former, and other cases the latter
The pursuit of the moderation is all that should matter.
